Sourdough Cinnamon Rolls

These pillowy, tangy-sweet cinnamon rolls take a little extra time, but the flavor and texture are so worth it. With a soft sourdough dough and gooey cinnamon-sugar swirl, they’re a dreamy upgrade to the classic.

Ingredients:

For the Dough:

  • 1 cup active sourdough starter

  • 1 cup warm milk

  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted

  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar

  • 2 large eggs

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour

  • 1 tsp salt

Filling:

  • ½ cup unsalted butter, softened

  • 1 cup brown sugar, packed

  • 2 tbsp ground cinnamon

Cream Cheese Frosting:

  • ½ cup cream cheese, softened

  • ¼ cup unsalted butter, softened

  • 1 cup powdered sugar

  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

Instructions:

  • Add sourdough starter, warm milk, melted butter, sugar, and eggs into the bowl. Mix well.

  • Add the flour and salt to the wet ingredients, and knead the dough until it forms a smooth ball. Cover the bowl with a kitchen towel and let the dough rise for at least 4 hours or overnight.

  • Preheat the oven to 350°F. Roll out the dough on a floured surface into a rectangle.

  • Spread the softened butter over the dough, and then sprinkle with brown sugar and ground cinnamon.

  • Roll the dough tightly from the long side, then cut into 12 equal slices.

  • Place the rolls in a greased baking pan. Let them rise for an additional 30 minutes.

  • Bake for 25-30 minutes into the preheated oven.

  • Prepare the cream cheese frosting: Add cream cheese, softened butter, powdered sugar, and vanilla extract into the bowl and beat until smooth.

  • Frost the cream cheese frosting over cinnamon rolls.

  • Serve!
